2006年1月 Narnia, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
To say it was wonderful is to say at the least an understatement. It was beyond wonderful. Of course the set design, the special effects, the charactors and their make-up and costuming made the story seem incredibaly real. However, the story itself is what has caught me by a very genuine, joyful surprise! Now, first I am making a disclaimer.
IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THE MOVIE: YOU SHOULD NOT READ THIS BLOG, IT WILL RUIN THE BEGINNING, THE STORY, AND OF COURSE THE ENDING.
That said, I cannot describe the surprise for me when I realized C.S. Lewis wrote this fabulous fairy tale to tell the true story of the Crucifying of Jesus Christ, Our Saviour and Lord. Perhaps everyone else in the "Believer" community knew this, but not me. Now I knew C. S. Lewis was a Christian and some of his writings are used in preaching manner. But the land of Narnia has taken me by great surprise! I was gleefully enthralled in this tale, along with my girls, when I realized that the Lion was indeed a character based on Christ. He allowed, willfully offered, himself as a sacrifice in place of a boy who should of been killed due to his sins. The boy had betrayed his family. Law in Narnia states that anyone found guilty of betrayal must be put to death. The Lion, whose name is Aslan, is the King of Narnia. The White Witch, who calls herself in disguise the Queen of Narnia is a symbolic charactor of Satan: the evil that lurks in this place we call earth. The children, who are called direct descendants of Adam and Eve, "Humans" represent of course every one of us. We are the ones who should of taken the punishment that Jesus took upon the cross. We were the sinners as this boy, Edmund, was the betrayer.
Just like Christ, Aslan willingly allows the evil witch and her minions to bind him, beat him, humiliate him and then she plunges her knife into Him and kills the Lion, Aslan, the KING.
Two of the girls who witness the death, weeping throughout the sacrifce, stay with his dead body during the night. They rest on his body, which lays on the stone slab where sacrfical deaths take place. Upon daylight they awake to find his body cold.
Then, when they start to leave and walk down the stairs, there is a sudden Tremble and behind them they see the arisen LION, in full Glory. His Body intact and all the hair the evil witch had shaved off to humiliate Him is back and glowing.
It is a beautiful scene, moment and realization of what this story is really about. Right before this moment my youngest daughter was starting to get bored but suddenly she too was taken in by the Truth behind this disguised tale.
I cannot even bring to words how touching and enlightening I found Narnia, The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. I, along with the girls want to and will go again very soon as we so crave this experience again.
Perhaps you all knew this about the story. I was not aware of it. Now, in the past I have taken note that in many fairy tales such as Sleeping Beauty there is a strong Christian message, as the good fairys arm the young prince with a sword of righteousness to battle the evil witch. How love conquers evil EVERYTIME.
Narnia, as it was a new one for me blew me away. I so want to share with everyone : Take the family to see this movie. It is for young and old. It is a great moment to teach, share and mesmorize, your young ones. Show your children what this story is based upon. It is a great way to teach your children or your friends, again young and old, about being saved by HIS Sacrifice on the Cross for Our sins.
I have added a quote and two links to sites that share much more about the story and C.S. Lewis. As for me, I intend on getting the book and reading it as soon as possible. Of course I will be reading it to my girls as well. I am really amazed I have missed reading it all these years as I have always been an avid reader. Usually I say a movie never outdoes the book, but I cannot help but wonder if perhaps in this case, the movie does an even better job of sharing the Good News, telling the story.
I hope you take my advice and enjoy this great work and would love to hear your perspective, experience and take on it. Also I imagine many already know all this as stated above. But for me, again what a great surprise!
